2024 Update

  • Continued to co-lead our most significant student access programs, including SEE UTM for Black identifying students in Peel Region high schools: 40+ students have participated in the program since its launch in 2022.
    • Planned to grow the program to engage 50 students annually starting in 2025.
  • Worked with local school boards to run a series of Access Days: i.e., opportunities for Black high school students to explore campus, make friends, and join Black-led workshops about higher education.
  • Launched the STEAM Academy, designed for Black high school students to connect with UTM mentors as they earn community service hours on campus.
  • Hosted Kuumba, a one-day event run with Peel District School Board, which welcomed 300+ Black middle school girls to campus to meet students and alumni and participate in workshops about women in STEAM.
  • Partnered with the 100 Strong Foundation to host 50+ Black middle school students on campus in summer 2022 and 2023, running workshops to celebrate Black identity and discuss the power of post-secondary education.
  • Organized Black Excellence STEAM Day, collaborating with faculty, school boards, and Black-led student groups on workshops highlighting opportunities across all university fields: 50 Black students participated in 2023.
  • Continued to run the Black Youth Mentorship Program with Big Brothers, Big Sisters of Peel, connecting Black youth with UTM student mentors.

  • Continuing to collaborate with UTM’s Office of the Registrar to lead some of our most significant student access programs, including SEE@UTM for Black identifying students in Peel Region high schools.

  • Continued to lead UTM’s welcome events, including Black Excellence Orientation, which engaged 80+ students in 2023: 92% of event attendees agreed that this orientation shared valuable information.
  • Continued to advocate for new resources to fund transition programs for Black and equity-deserving students.

  • Launched the Black mentorship program with the Office of Advancement, pairing twelve Black students with Black alumni mentors. Started discussions to double the number of program participants in 2025.
  • Ran a Black alumni panel designed to support Black first-year students in choosing a program of study.

  • Continued to open experiential opportunities to Black students, including by offering 17 student service co-op placements over the last two years through SEE UTM.
  • Promoted on-campus internships to diverse communities, designing programs grounded in our commitment to inclusive excellence.
